This morning I took my annual Veteran’s Day Weekend hike to the Pinnacle. The Pinnacle is the anecdotal high point of Berks County , PA (just shy of 1700′) and sits on the AT between the Windsor Furnace and Eckville Shelters. The actual high point lies farther west in the vicinity of Bethel, but it is seldom visited because it doesn’t have a vista or other glitzy landmark.
Seven members of Berks-Lehigh Hiking and Backpacking met me at a State Gamelands parking lot in Eckville at 4:45AM. We hiked a short section of blue-blazed trail before joining the AT. By the time we reached the ridge, it was already starting to get pretty light outside. Everyone hustled for the last short stretch, and the last members of our group reached the Pinnacle mere seconds before the sun peeked over the horizon. We gave to requisite ooh’s and ahh’s as the sky lit up with color. We all stood around chatting for a while (mostly about hiking and hiking gear), and then we hiked the 4.5 miles back to the car.
The sunrise from the Pinnacle rarely disappoints. The colors quickly flood the farmland below and truly gives you the sense that the world is waking up before your eyes.
